Downtown arena district: framework approved
I have received many emails and phone calls about this issue over the past few weeks. Please know that I have given each one consideration in coming to a decision. Ultimately, I supported the negotiated framework for a new downtown arena district. Please allow me to explain why.

Transit service improvements coming this fall
Transit service improvements approved in the 2011 budget come into effect on August 28. Based on motions I made during Council's budget deliberations last winter, we'll see improvements especially to off-peak service (midday, weekend, evening) in the southeast. Here is a summary of some major changes in Ward 12.

Crawford Plains Neighbourhood Rehabilitation
As part of Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Program (a designated fund we use to rehabilitate aging neighbourhood infrastructure throughout the City), Crawford Plains is being rehabilitated this summer. Construction should start on June 30.

Smoking in Outdoor Shared Spaces
As I wrote here, I recently asked City Administration to compile a report on what other Canadian cities are doing to regulate smoking in outdoor areas. I have brought this issue to the attention of the public and my fellow Councillors because I share the concerns constituents have raised to me about children's exposure to second-hand smoke in outdoor recreation areas like playgrounds and sports fields. These spaces promote healthy activity, and children -- as well as adults -- have the right to enjoy them without suffering the harms of cigarette smoke and litter. Medical evidence affirms that children's developing lungs are particularly harmed by the effects of cigarettes.

Edmonton Transit community fair: Saturday, May 28
Check out the third annual Edmonton Transit community fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Edmonton Mall (Phase 1 between The Bay and Zellers). Staff will be there with information about new programs, LRT expansion, new payment options, transit security and more.
