Nominate your good neighbour!

Safe, vibrant and inclusive communities are created through the countless efforts and actions of community members. Good neighbours help build great neighbourhoods. Good neighbours are the people whose actions, large or small, improve the quality of life of individuals and the community.

The Good Neighbour Awards are a way for Edmontonians to formally recognize the people who make Edmonton neighbourhoods great places to live. Their actions – from shovelling a walk to organizing a block party – help create safer, more connected neighbourhoods and model how each of us can make a positive difference in our communities.

Our future leaders discuss racism and discrimination

Last week I had the chance to sit down at City Hall with some future leaders. Working with the school boards in our city, I invited student representatives from our high schools to join me for a dialogue about racism and discrimination in our schools. Our goal was to share experiences, but also to brainstorm strategies as part of the “I’m Committed to a Racism Free Edmonton” campaign underway in our city.

What I heard from the students was both upsetting and inspiring. I heard from many that discrimination is common in our schoolyards and classrooms—students hear racist jokes, face misunderstanding about their backgrounds or beliefs. However, I also heard resilience and determination to bring about change. These young people have established programs in their schools to help newcomers transition into new environments; or they have spoken up when they hear racism happening. And many committed, after our discussion, to go back to their schools and keep the dialogue going: to encourage students to get educated about the history of discrimination in our country—and anything else they can do to help move toward a racism-free Edmonton.

Compensation for Councillors

An independent committee recommends adjustments to Councillors’ salaries each year based on Statistics Canada data about average weekly earnings in Alberta. This process ensures that Councillors do not make direct recommendations about their own salaries. Last year, Council received a 0.63% increase; this year, 4.64%. While these increases are based on Alberta averages, I know that financial times have been difficult for many. I am donating half of my 2011 increase to support community organizations in Ward 12.

Southeast LRT construction delayed, but not stalled

Recently, Council approved a plan for the Southeast LRT to Mill Woods. This was a major, exciting step forward for our city. However, the original timeline for completion -- by 2016 -- was set based on the assumption that infrastructure development would be stimulated in the next few years by Expo 2017, with other orders of government showing strong commitment to this development. With Expo no longer on the table, we have to revise our expectations and build the SE LRT in stages. I remain fully committed to seeing through development of the LRT. I will continue to advocate for funding from the federal and provincial governments, and for the City of Edmonton to continue to set aside its own funds for this project.

Update: Snow maintenance

Last month, I received more snow-related calls and emails than I have received in any month since being elected. Residents from all areas in Ward 12 have said that their expectations are not being met by the City’s current plan. I agree, and we must do a better job in the future.

Smart Bus technology

Council just took a step toward innovative transit. Funds within the Transportation budget will be allocated toward a Smart Bus Technology Pilot Project to be implemented in 2012. With annual ETS ridership up 60% from 2000 to 2009, it’s clear that we need to keep pace with growing demand.

Smart Bus technology will initially be tested on 50 buses. It includes real-time schedule information for mobile devices; bus security cameras; and automated stop announcements to increase ETS accessibility. Smart Buses also allow staff to quickly identify service problems; to monitor the fleet more efficiently; and to evaluate route schedule adjustments. I'm keen to learn the results of the pilot project.
