Improvements to our snow removal strategy
It's been clear this winter that many Ward 12 residents are not satisfied with our current snow removal strategies. In response to residents' feedback, Council has been discussing possible solutions with Administration. City staff have been working hard to find more effective and timely strategies, traveling to other Canadian cities to compare tactics and doing research into what would work in Edmonton.
I am very supportive of the changes Council approved this month. I think they will significantly address many of the complaints that were raised to me these past months. However, our review of the snow and ice policy will and should be ongoing, so I continue to welcome feedback on how the clearance of our sidewalks and roads is affecting you and could be improved.

Nominate a Man of Honour
Six years ago, the Men of Honour Awards were launched to reflect the belief that men and women must work together to overcome violence and exploitation. Each year ten men have been chosen from nominations submitted by the community for their exemplary roles in fostering respect, encouraging healthy relationships, creating positive opportunities for vulnerable people, and providing inspiration.

Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness: March 7-11, 2011
Today I proclaimed the Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness in Edmonton on behalf of Mayor Mandel and City Council. Sexual exploitation is taking selfish or unfair advantage of any person for sexual purposes or gain. It happens in Edmonton, and it affects us all.
The week of awareness runs March 7 to 11, with sessions on human trafficking; sexual exploitation and the law; sexual minority groups; cultural community groups; and the Prostitution Offender Program. For details about the week of awareness, visit the events calendar at www.REACHedmonton.ca.

Update on the proposed arena and entertainment district
On March 2, Council heard an update from Administration on its research into a potential downtown arena and entertainment district. While Council has directed staff to negotiate options for this development, no decision has been made at this point. For my part, I am continuing to gather information and feedback before making a final decision. Council needs to perform due diligence and ensure public interest is at the forefront of negotiations.
