Regulating smoking in outdoor spaces
We know that, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in Canada. We also know that these effects are particularly harmful to children, whose higher breathing rates, developing lungs, and less developed immune systems make them more susceptible to second-hand smoke.
A number of Canadian municipalities have recently taken the lead on regulating tobacco in commonly shared outdoor spaces. To explore what options Edmonton could pursue around this issue, I made the following inquiry to Administration on March 16.

UDodge
I had the privilege of being involved in this year's UDodge Tournament, an initiative led by United Way, the Edmonton Police Service, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Edmonton. The tournament brings together youth and adult mentors to build community spirit, learn from one another, raise funds for a good cause, and have fun. Read about the event here.

Update on the downtown sports and entertainment district
I supported this week’s motion at Council directing Administration to negotiate a financial framework with the Katz Group for a sports and entertainment facility downtown. I had a number of reservations heading into Wednesday’s discussion, but overall my concerns have been sufficiently addressed, at this point, to give me confidence that public interest will be protected.
