I'm Committed to a Racism Free Edmonton campaign

Yesterday I had the honour of joining City of Edmonton staff and community members, including partners from 16 major institutions in our City, to recognize commitments made this year to eliminate racism in Edmonton. I represent City Council on the Racism Free Edmonton initiative, which has been running a campaign to engage Edmontonians for the past several months – at their workplaces, at school, at libraries, in shopping malls – to talk about issues of racism and discrimination, and to commit to actions to reduce them. Many of our colleagues and friends have committed to speaking out against racism when they see it occurring, or to asking whether their workplaces have policies to ensure diversity and inclusion – and lots more.

It has been a remarkable achievement to start conversations with over 23,000 Edmontonians about these issues, which too often do not get discussed. However, there are obviously many more people to be engaged if we are to be a fully inclusive City, so these conversations must continue even though this public awareness campaign has concluded.

Smoking in Outdoor Shared Spaces

As I wrote here, I recently asked City Administration to compile a report on what other Canadian cities are doing to regulate smoking in outdoor areas. I have brought this issue to the attention of the public and my fellow Councillors because I share the concerns constituents have raised to me about children's exposure to second-hand smoke in outdoor recreation areas like playgrounds and sports fields. These spaces promote healthy activity, and children -- as well as adults -- have the right to enjoy them without suffering the harms of cigarette smoke and litter. Medical evidence affirms that children's developing lungs are particularly harmed by the effects of cigarettes.
