Community services
The southeast is one of the fastest growing areas of Edmonton, and services need to keep up.
Community-based services – recreation centres, libraries, parks, trails – are important to the high quality of life Edmontonians expect and deserve. These services keep us healthy and active, they give community groups places to gather and connect, and they help children and youth to get involved in their neighbourhoods and build strong relationships.
During my first term, with the support of my Council colleagues, I achieved the following:
- Funding approved for a new recreation centre and library in the Meadows: these are lifeblood community services for the southeast. A site has been selected and design is underway.
- Funding approved for a new library in Mill Woods: the Mill Woods branch provides valuable services for newcomers and youth, but has been badly overcrowded. Council has approved funding for a new, stand-alone branch.
- Construction of a new transit centre in the Meadows (opened 2010): I’ve pushed hard for better bus service in new areas of the southeast, and a new transit centre has helped make this a reality.
- New fire stations in Ellerslie and the Meadows. In past years, emergency response times in the southeast lagged way behind most parts of the city. With new fire stations now open, citizens have better access to essential emergency services.
By 2013, my vision of the southeast includes youth, families and seniors using thriving recreation centres and libraries, timely emergency services ensuring safe communities, and fast, efficient transit serving new and established neighbourhoods.
