Public transit

Watch the video clip: my commitment to transit

I have fought hard to improve our transit system, and thanks to support of my colleagues on Council, we’ve taken important steps toward bringing the LRT to Mill Woods.

I asked my colleagues to make the Mill Woods route a priority, and we have finalized the route the LRT will take from downtown to Mill Woods. The extension to Mill Woods is Council’s next priority for LRT expansion.

I am committed to working with the provincial and federal governments to get funding in place to support the LRT and match City contributions. We can’t build the LRT alone, but with support from all levels of government, we are finally in position to make the LRT to Mill Woods a reality.

The LRT is only one part of our transit system. I am equally committed to outstanding bus service that meets the needs of all communities. With Council’s support, I’ve accomplished the following:

  • A new transit centre for the Meadows to improve service to the entire southeast
  • Direct bus service from Mill Woods to the new LRT station at Century Park
  • Improved bus service to new neighbourhoods like Silver Berry and Wild Rose, where service outside of rush hours was previously not available
  • More buses on major routes to reduce overcrowding
  • Greater security presence at transit centres. Since I made a motion for increased security funding, safety at centres like Mill Woods Town Centre has dramatically improved

These changes are working. In 2009, Edmonton Transit had 68.5 million riders, an increase of 6 million since 2007. We’re getting better at meeting Edmontonians’ needs, but we need to continue to do better.

Comments about "Public transit"

Hello. I am amongst the vast majority of commuters who use a single vehicle to commute in this city. Given that such a small minority uses the LRT compared to single vehicle commuters, I find it alarming that such enormous amounts of money are being spent on the LRT. I need my vehicle to do my job. There is no way that my occupational logistics could tolerate all the park and ride / transfer / waiting for train nonsense that typifies public transit.

The city should think less about making fashion statements and more about function, as the latter pays the bills in the end. To coin a phrase from popular culture, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Not everyone lives in Century Park. What about the rest of us?

The folks who run this city need to resist politically correct eco-conformism and instead give the majority what we need....proper roads and infrastructure so we can use our cars to get to work and live in this town. It is astonishing that the planners choose to ignore practical reality faced by the majority just for a warm fuzzy from David Suzuki et al. Rest assured, when the cameras are off, most of those folks would not be caught dead using public transit.

Thank you for sharing your comments.

Transit may never meet the needs of all Edmontonians, and we will always need to invest in roads and infrastructure. We’ve invested hundreds of millions in major road improvements, such as Quesnell and numerous widening and repaving projects.

But transit plays an essential role in our city, for thousands and thousands of Edmontonians. Our system had 68 million riders in 2009, meaning on average, we have almost 200,000 riders every day. Many Edmontonians rely on bus and LRT to carry out their daily lives.

Many are students, seniors, newcomers, or those who cannot afford the $9,000 per year it costs to own a car, on average. These people rely on transit to get to work, to school, to appointments, to shop. I take the bus to City Hall almost every day, and I see firsthand the important role our system plays in the lives of many.

Transit also plays an important role in environmental sustainability. If everyone who currently uses transit switched to driving a car, our total greenhouse gas emissions would rise by almost 40%. That is far from insignificant, and could make the difference between achieving our environmental goals and failing future generations.

LRT is an important part of the transit system. It serves tens of thousands of Edmontonians every day, including many from the southeast who catch a direct bus from Mill Woods to Century Park. LRT is environmentally more sustainable, and it helps promote the kind of development we need to keep our growth balanced and our economy vital.

Thank you again for your comments, and for giving me the opportunity to share my views.

Hi sir,
Are the roads in Edmonton going to have a 3rd lane maybe a forth instead of the 2 lanes which are mostly all over the city? Maybe add some free flow lanes to replace the yields. Oh have more lights in the pedestrian zones so all drivers can see others walk to their homes safely and bus stops. And bridges, we don't have enough in our city.

This city is a car city. Public transit we are not. Public transit for all will not happen in millwoods. By the way, I have a feeling your daughter will be driving to university(like her friends), to the mall, to Jasper to Calgary like anyone who want to have independence. As long as there is insurance companies the car will stay for many many years.

I need to gas up now.
Thanks for reading this.

Don't heed the previous two comments that pertain to the idea that public transportation is stupid. They most likely are peole with stable jobs well into their 40's or above, and hold the younger generation, the future of the city, as unimportant. Many students seek an education and the ride to post-secondary institutions are terrible via bus. Even the transit to Century park isn't perfect. The LRT extention to Millwoods would help the entire population of youths in the community to reach destinations such as the university, and recreational areas. These people are closed minded to what is, instead of open to what could be. Sure we live in a city for cars, but why can't we become a city with EFFICIENT buses and city trains? In Europe, that's what kept the cities alive, as people from the entire city could quickly gather for celebrations, or attend universities while also having 2-4 hours more in their day that isn't wasted in inefficient busing. Not only would this help the environment, but it would help the youth educate themselves. Also, being able to pop onto a city train and go to West Edmonton Mall or some place in the city quickly would prompt kids and youth to leave their living rooms and enjoy life! The Edmonton way of life that consists of television and beer isn't satifying. Because the city trains would make commuting so efficient, the younger generation would become more active in their lives, like the youth in Europe. So please, don't be selfish and stick with the car when so many of the younger generation have no way of commuting.

Also for drivers, more people using the trains would mean less people driving on the roads which means less traffic. :D Did you think of that possibility?

By the way, you say that the LRT will be extended to Millwoods, but when? What year?
