Sustainability
It is crucial to ensure our city’s environmental and fiscal sustainability.
I've pushed hard for a more sustainable city, and so have my colleagues on Council.
Tranist is a major part of a sustainable city. I've succeeded in getting more and better bus service in new communities and confirming the route for the LRT extension to Mill Woods, and I want to see the LRT extension through to completion.
I've also supported revitalizing older parts of the city and downtown. Council has established a new program for revitalizing infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, and sewers) in mature neighbourhoods, and we're making up for decades of under-investment. This is an important part of controlling urban sprawl and supporting a more compact, more sustainable city. At the same time, though, we need to maintain our commitment to services for new communities as well.
My Council colleagues and I have set a new plan to guide the city's development for the next ten years. This plan commits to balancing new growth and revitalization. We've also made unprecedented investments in transit, and in greening our city services. Our recycling and waste management services are world-class, we're reducing the footprint of city vehicles, and our new buildings are more energy efficient than ever before.
Sustainability is an important part of all the work we do, and it should continue to be. With your support, I will keep working for a more sustainable Edmonton.
